Roberta Honigman has a background in mental health social work with significant experience in the area of body image disturbance specifically relating to patients seeking cosmetic surgical and medical procedures. She has worked closely in a clinical capacity in consultation with plastic surgeons, dermatologists and other cosmetic practitioners, counselling patients before and after cosmetic, plastic and reconstructive procedures.
She has undertaken research into the role and importance of screening in cosmetic practice and has co-authored the book ‘Living with your Looks’ on BDD. She has published widely in national and international journals and has contributed to many scientific meetings and media discussions in this field. She has undertaken a comprehensive review of the cosmetic practice industry in Victoria and was also a member of the Australian Health Ministers Advisory Council committee tasked with identifying and reviewing the adequacy of consumer safeguards in relation to advertising, marketing and standards of practice in cosmetic medical and surgical practice. She was invited to be a member of an international medical advisory board with a view to developing best practice in the provision of all aspects of aesthetic medicine. Currently in addition to private practice she is attached as counsellor to Laser Dermatology and Plastic Surgery clinics at the Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne.
