What Is The Skincare Treatment Dermaplaning?

What is Dermaplaning?

These days, we’re well-aware of the digitised editing involved when it comes to images of models and actors.

But what if we told you that having smooth, porcelain-like skin – without the ‘peach fuzz’ – could be a reality?

Welcome to the recent skincare treatment rising in popularity – ‘Dermaplaning’. Dermaplaning is a dermatological process that gently scrapes the surface of the skin with a surgical scalpel – exfoliating one’s face to perfection. The method is often mistaken as a form of shaving, but it’s much more complicated and delicate than that.

While it eradicates facial hair and ensures a soft base for foundation, the dermaplaning procedure also:

  • removes dead skin
  • diminishes the effects of sun damage
  • reduces the signs of fine lines and hyperpigmentation
  • exfoliates and brightens dull skin

Following the non-abrasive method of skin rejuvenation, dermaplaning allows active ingredients from skin care products and skin peels to penetrate deeper into the skin. As a result, you can achieve a healthier and more radiant appearance.

The best part? Dermaplaning is a painless process. As long as it’s done correctly and managed by a licensed technician with the right tools.

It’s also safe for sensitive skin types, rosacea, redness, visible facial veins, and pregnant women.

For a better understanding of how it all works, read on.

What are the dermaplaning procedure steps?

So what’s involved in a Dermaplane procedure? There’s 3 steps – starting with the skin preparation, the actual dermaplaning itself, then the aftercare treatment.

Step 1 – Ensure the skin is clean

Before starting almost any dermatological treatment, the skin must be cleaned. Prepare the skin by doing a double cleanse with a gentle cleanser to ensure all oil and makeup are removed. Cleansers rich in antioxidants are recommended to help retain the skin’s moisture. After rinsing, softly pat the face dry.

As an option, you can apply a gel, face oil, or lotion after cleansing to help the blade glide smoothly over the face. To avoid irritation, a sweet almond, apricot, or jojoba oil is ideal. However, some people choose to keep their skin naked. It’s totally up to you. Using products isn’t essential to the process and won’t have an impact on the overall results.

Step 2 – Use the Dermaplaning tool correctly

Here’s where the actual Dermaplaning starts. And it requires using a sterilised scalpel at a 45-degree angle – and moving it slowly and correctly around the contours of the face.

To successfully remove dead skin and peach fuzz, hold the skin taut with your free hand (not the one holding the scalpel!) to make scraping easier and more effective. Each stroke should be downwards, gentle, and short.

Most technicians choose to start from the forehead, then proceed with the cheeks, chin, and jawline, before finishing up with the nose – since it takes the most effort to clean.

The whole procedure is actually very relaxing for the client, with many falling asleep during the treatment!

Step 3 – Skincare treatment after Dermaplaning

Following the procedure, massage an alcohol-free toner into all areas of the face. This removes any loose skin cells and hair leftover. Using a toner containing lavender floral water is ideal due to its antibacterial properties. It cleanses deep into the skin pores, while also calming any irritated skin.

The Dermaplaning process is completed with a rich moisturiser facial massage, followed by the application of a balm. Using these two topical products together creates that beautiful radiant afterglow -which is one of the key benefits of Dermaplaning!

To get the most from the treatment, it’s recommended that clients avoid any immediate excessive physical activity and avoid direct contact with the sun for 48-72 hours afterward. It’s also important to apply sunscreen and gentle cleansers every day.
